Shravasti Centre

The Shravasti Centre (Chinese Buddhist Temple) of the Maha Bodhi Society of India is situated in the sacred Buddhist land of Shravasti, one of the most important places associated with the life and teachings of the Buddha. Located adjacent to the historic Jetavanaramaya, the Centre provides a peaceful setting for pilgrims and devotees to engage in meditation, chanting, religious observances, and other Dhamma activities.

Shravasti occupies a distinguished place in Buddhist history. It was at Jetavana, the famous monastery at Shravasti, that the Buddha spent a significant portion of his monastic life. According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha observed 45 Vassāna (rainy-season) retreats during his lifetime, with many of these spent at Shravasti.

The Buddha also delivered a large number of His Dhamma discourses at Shravasti. The teachings given here became an important part of the Buddhist tradition and contributed greatly to the spread and preservation of the Buddha's message.

The Shravasti Centre has a distinctive history within the Maha Bodhi Society of India. The Chinese Buddhist Temple was entrusted to the Maha Bodhi Society of India through the last will and testament of its founder, the late Rev. Ren Chen, a Chinese Buddhist monk and a Life Member of the Maha Bodhi Society of India.

Rev. Ren Chen's association with the Society reflects the international character of Buddhist fellowship and the shared commitment of devotees and monastics from different countries to the preservation of Buddhist heritage.Through his generous decision to entrust the Centre to the Maha Bodhi Society of India, the temple became part of the Society's wider network of Buddhist centres serving pilgrims and promoting the practice and study of the Buddha Dhamma.
