Venerable Pelwatte Seewalee Thero

General Secretary, Maha Bodhi Society of India

Venerable Pelwatte Seewalee Thero has been serving as the General Secretary of the Maha Bodhi Society of India, carrying forward the noble mission of reviving Buddhism and preserving the sacred places associated with the life of Lord Buddha.

With his deep understanding of the Dhamma and his tireless dedication to the welfare of humanity, Venerable Thero provides spiritual and administrative leadership to MBSI's global activities.

Ven. P Seewalee Thero was born in Badulla district of Sri Lanka. His father and mother were H. M. R. Bandara and N. W. Premawati respectively. He had his ordination at Mulagiri Raja Mahaviharaya, Peleata in Monaragala District of Sri Lanka In 1978 and his monastic education at Vidyalankara Pirivena, Colombo.

He has served as Bhikkhu-In-Charge of Buddhagaya and Sarnath Centre of Maha Bodhi Society of India and currently serving as the General Secretary since 2016.

The General Secretary is the principal Executive Officer of Maha Bodhi Society of India, subject to the control of the Governing Body and exercise supervision over all affairs of the Society. He act as an ex-officio member of all the Committees of Management of all the different institutions run by Maha Bodhi Society of India.

It is with great reverence and gratitude that I accept the responsibility entrusted to me as the General Secretary of the Maha Bodhi Society of India.

MBSI, founded by the great visionary Anagarika Dharmapala in 1891, has over a century of dedicated service in the cause of Buddhism. Our mission is as relevant today as it was then, to spread the Dhamma, foster peace, and promote compassion for the benefit of all beings.

Together with the support of our members, devotees and well-wishers, let us continue this sacred journey of service and compassion for a more peaceful and harmonious world.

May the blessings of the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha be with you all.
