Father of Anagarika Dharmapala
Don Carolis Hewawitharana was a devoted Buddhist, successful businessman, and generous supporter of religious, educational, and social causes. As the father of Anagarika Dharmapala, he provided strong moral and financial support that helped Dharmapala dedicate his life to the revival of Buddhism in Ceylon, India, and abroad.
Although Don Carolis did not know English, he built a highly successful business through wisdom, discipline, and hard work. When young Dharmapala chose spiritual service over a business career, his father respected his decision and continued to support him financially. This support helped Dharmapala travel, work for Buddhism, and continue his struggle for the restoration of Buddha Gaya.
He was known for his devotion to the Three Gems, generosity, discipline, and commitment to education and humanitarian service. His noble life remained an inspiring example of a Buddhist Upasaka devoted to truth, humanity, and the welfare of others.
